أكدت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية إحدى الدول الثلاث المستضيفة لكأس العالم 2026، إلى جانب المكسيك وكندا، رفضها استبعاد إسرائيل من المونديال.
وقال متحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية لهيئة الإذاعة البريطانية (بي بي سي) إن الولايات المتحدة ستعمل على «الوقف التام لأي محاولة لمنع المنتخب الإسرائيلي من المشاركة في كأس العالم».
ويأتي التدخل الأمريكي بعد ساعات من نشر صحيفة التايمز البريطانية تقريراً يفيد بأن الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم (يويفا) يعتزم الاجتماع الأسبوع القادم لاتخاذ قرار بشأن إيقاف إسرائيل عن المشاركة في المسابقات الدولية، حيث أيدت غالبية أعضاء اللجنة التنفيذية قرار تعليق العضوية.
ويحتل منتخب الكيان حالياً المركز الثالث في المجموعة التاسعة في تصفيات أوروبا المؤهلة إلى كأس العالم، بنفس عدد نقاط إيطاليا (9 نقاط)، وبفارق 6 نقاط عن النرويج، متصدر الترتيب.
The United States, one of the three host countries for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Mexico and Canada, has confirmed its refusal to exclude Israel from the tournament.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department told the BBC that the United States will work to "completely halt any attempt to prevent the Israeli team from participating in the World Cup."
This American intervention comes just hours after the British newspaper The Times published a report stating that UEFA (the European football governing body) intends to meet next week to decide on suspending Israel from participating in international competitions, as the majority of the executive committee members supported the decision to suspend membership.
The Israeli team currently occupies third place in Group Nine of the European qualifiers for the World Cup, with the same number of points as Italy (9 points), and 6 points behind Norway, which leads the standings.
