The Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, announced that the implementation of the plan to occupy the Gaza Strip, approved by the security cabinet "kabinett," early this morning (Friday), requires about 200,000 reservist soldiers.
The military establishment opposes the plan presented by the occupying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the kabinett meeting to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, due to the danger it poses to the lives of prisoners and soldiers.
The "Kan" channel, affiliated with the official broadcasting authority, reported that sources familiar with the matter said Zamir stated during the kabinett meeting that the military and infrastructure requirements for implementing the plan necessitate around 200,000 reservist soldiers, "many of whom served long days in reserve" during the war.
The Chief of Staff indicated that implementing the plan requires establishing hospitals for the civilian population and delivering humanitarian aid in quantities that the army cannot currently distribute, as he expressed.
According to the channel, Zamir confirmed that there is not enough civilian infrastructure or humanitarian response to move the population, and we will need to establish hospitals for them.
The Chief of Staff suggested excluding the return of prisoners held in the Gaza Strip from the war objectives.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir reiterated his opposition to the entry of humanitarian aid and the construction of hospitals in the Gaza Strip. Zamir responded to him: "I suggest that you remove the return of prisoners held in Gaza from the war objectives."
Israeli media revealed that the approval of the plan came during a 10-hour meeting, and Netanyahu's office announced in a statement early Friday that the Israeli army is preparing to complete its control over the Gaza Strip.
The plan stipulates that the Israeli army will begin moving towards areas it has not previously entered, with the aim of controlling the center of the strip and the city of Gaza, despite warnings from the General Staff about this step.
According to the proposal presented by Netanyahu, the plan begins with the displacement of Palestinians from the city of Gaza towards the south, followed by encircling the city, and then carrying out additional incursions into residential gathering centers, according to the official Hebrew broadcasting authority.
During the ongoing war in the strip since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army occupied the entire city of Gaza except for small areas and remained there for several months before retreating in April 2024 from most of its areas after declaring the "destruction of Hamas's infrastructure in the city."
From the entire strip, parts of the city of Deir al-Balah and the camps in the central governorate, such as Al-Nuseirat, Al-Maghazi, and Al-Bureij, were not occupied by the Israeli forces, but hundreds of buildings were destroyed there, according to Palestinian officials.
