تحدث مهندسون ومراقبون عن المشروع-المعجزة، الذي تقوم المملكة العربية السعودية ببنائه بكلفة لا تقل عن 7 مليارات من الدولارات.
ويهدف مشروع «الجسر البري» (Land bridge) إلى ربط أهم مدن المملكة بالسكك الحديد، وتعزيز التجارة والسفر. ولن يستغرق السفر بالقطار من الرياض إلى جدة أكثر من 4 ساعات. كما سيربط المشروع مدينة جدة بالدمام.
ويعد هذا التوسع في الخطوط الحديد جزءاً لا يتجزأ من مستهدفات رؤية 2030، الهادفة إلى تحويل المملكة إلى منطلق رئيسي للنقل في المنطقتين الخليجية والعربية. وبموجب مشروع «الجسر البري»، تسعى المملكة إلى زيادة حجم شبكتها من السكك الحديد من نحو 5300 كيلومتر إلى أكثر من 8 آلاف كيلومتر.
وهي خطوة يتوقع أن تحدث تحولاً كبيراً في الربط بين مدن المملكة داخلياً، وبينها وبين مدن بلدان الخليج. وتشمل خطط التوسع مد خط حديدي لنحو 1500 كيلومتر من جدة، على البحر الأحمر، إلى الدمام على الخليج، عن طريق العاصمة الرياض. ويهدف «الجسر البري» إلى خفض المسافة بين الرياض وجدة من نحو 12 ساعة حالياً بالسيارة إلى أقل من 4 ساعات بالقطار، من خلال خط حديدي يمتد نحو 900 كيلومتر من الرياض لجدة.
وتعتزم مؤسسة الخطوط الحديد السعودية بناء شبكة محطات للشحن وقطارات الركاب، من خلال ربط ميناء الملك عبد الله بالمدن الصناعية، خصوصاً ينبع. ويترافق ذلك مع حرص المؤسسة على تحديث أسطولها، خصوصاً بطلب تزويدها بـ 15 قطاراً تصل سرعة كل منها إلى 200 كيلومتر في الساعة. ويقترب -في الوقت نفسه- موعد تحقق «حلم الصحراء»، وهي خدمة قطار فاخر تمتد رحلته نحو 1290 كيلومتراً، لإتاحة فرصة للسياح لمشاهدة الطبيعة من الرياض إلى القريات.
وتشمل خطط التوسع المشار إليها استخدام قطارات تعمل بطاقة الهيدروجين. وتأتي هذه التطلعات وسط شعبية متنامية للسفر بالقطارات، إذ استقل القطار أكثر من 2.6 مليون مسافر خلال الربع الثاني من عام 2025. وتبدو السعودية ماضية في الطريق السليم لتصبح نموذجاً متفرداً للنقل المتكامل (البري والجوي والبحري) على مستوى منطقة الشرق الأوسط.

Engineers and observers spoke about the miracle project that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is building at a cost of no less than 7 billion dollars.
The "Land Bridge" project aims to connect the most important cities of the Kingdom by rail, enhancing trade and travel. Travel by train from Riyadh to Jeddah will take no more than 4 hours. The project will also connect the city of Jeddah with Dammam.
This expansion of the rail lines is an integral part of the targets of Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Kingdom into a major transportation hub in the Gulf and Arab regions. Under the "Land Bridge" project, the Kingdom seeks to increase the size of its railway network from about 5,300 kilometers to more than 8,000 kilometers.
This step is expected to bring about a significant transformation in the connectivity between the cities of the Kingdom internally, and between them and the cities of Gulf countries. The expansion plans include extending a railway line of about 1,500 kilometers from Jeddah, on the Red Sea, to Dammam on the Gulf, via the capital Riyadh. The "Land Bridge" aims to reduce the distance between Riyadh and Jeddah from about 12 hours currently by car to less than 4 hours by train, through a railway line extending approximately 900 kilometers from Riyadh to Jeddah.
The Saudi Railways Corporation intends to build a network of freight and passenger train stations by connecting King Abdullah Port with industrial cities, especially Yanbu. This is accompanied by the corporation's commitment to modernizing its fleet, particularly by requesting the provision of 15 trains, each capable of reaching speeds of 200 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the realization of the "Desert Dream" is approaching, which is a luxury train service that extends its journey for about 1,290 kilometers, providing an opportunity for tourists to see nature from Riyadh to Al-Qurayyat.
The aforementioned expansion plans include the use of hydrogen-powered trains. These aspirations come amidst a growing popularity for train travel, as more than 2.6 million passengers traveled by train during the second quarter of 2025. Saudi Arabia seems to be on the right track to become a unique model of integrated transportation (land, air, and sea) at the level of the Middle East.
