The Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars, and General President of Scientific Research and Ifta, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, affirmed the lofty status of knowledge in Islam, stating that it is a religion that respects knowledge and honors scholars, viewing knowledge as a path to fear, submission, and obedience to the command of Allah, the Exalted.
In a speech addressed to teachers and students on the occasion of the start of the new academic year, he said: “Knowledge holds a lofty status in Islam, and it is enough as evidence that the first word revealed from Allah, the Exalted, to the Prophet of Guidance - peace be upon him - was His saying: (Read in the name of your Lord who created),” pointing out that Islam is a religion that elevates the status of knowledge.
He noted that the Holy Quran directs, in its general verses, to reflection, contemplation, observation, and the exercise of thought and intellect to reach the truth and correctness, and all of this is achieved through knowledge and understanding, which is why the texts affirm this matter.
The Mufti added that sincere knowledge and dedication in seeking it increases faith in the soul,
and said: “The prophetic Sunnah contains texts and sayings, both verbal and practical, that illuminate the path for the Muslim and encourage him to learn and teach, and to be keen on researching everything that enhances the culture of the Muslim and equips him against destructive ideas and dangers surrounding the nation, at a time when our sons and daughters are heading to their seats in the classroom, asking Allah, the Exalted, to assist them and grant them success and achievement, for they are the pillars of the nation and its future.”
In his speech, Al Sheikh called on teachers to provide guidance to students, saying: “O teachers, you have a responsibility and a trust upon your shoulders to clarify the truth and teach the boys and girls what elevates their ranks in this world and the Hereafter, so you must be sincere, offer advice, open dialogue with your students at all educational stages, listen to the young before the old, and guide them towards what benefits them and strengthens their beliefs so they can be good pillars in their society, as education is a great trust, so be good role models and support your students towards goodness.”
The Mufti also advised students to be diligent with their time and invest it in what benefits them, to maintain their schedules, sit with their teachers, benefit from them, and listen to the guidance of their parents and guardians in their life affairs so they can be ambassadors of goodness for their families and builders of their homeland, which spares no effort or expense to bring them happiness and ease the difficulties they face, asking Allah, the Exalted, to reward the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince for their efforts in education, its curricula, and its teachers, which has contributed to a blessed educational renaissance that the Kingdom is experiencing in all fields.
He also asked Allah to protect the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince, to elevate their status for what they have provided to the country, its citizens, and Muslims everywhere, and to bless their lives, and to grant success to those involved in education in all good.
