A number of travel industry workers have revealed a surge in cancellations of international travel bookings due to the events occurring in the region. They confirmed that the current situation of exchanges of strikes and fears of escalating tensions has led many who wish to travel for summer vacations outside the Gulf region to rush to cancel their flight and accommodation bookings.
Ahmed Al-Yafei (an employee at a travel agency) stated that calls have been coming in for days to inquire about the possibility of postponing travel abroad. However, by Sunday morning, the calls increased with many requesting to cancel or postpone their bookings outright due to the escalating events between Iran and Israel. Al-Yafei added: "As the events intensified, we had to cancel several flights heading abroad to some nearby countries, although we confirmed that only the flight paths were changed, many preferred to postpone."
For his part, Antoine Yasser said: "We are currently witnessing a wave of cancellations for flights, and we have received many of those calls from people requesting to postpone their trips abroad."
Antoine confirmed that some have indeed traveled abroad but contacted us to bring their return date forward, while others canceled their trips, including those who intended to travel after the school exams or during the weekend. Adnan Fathi (an employee at a travel and tourism agency) confirmed that travelers' requests mainly involve completely canceling flights and demanding refunds for their bookings, while others preferred to postpone the idea of traveling to another time, justifying this by the tensions and escalating events in the region. In contrast, airlines have not disclosed the number of cancellation cases for international travel, and they confirmed that flight paths have been adjusted, which has increased flight times by one to two hours, avoiding routes over areas that may be affected by the events.
Monitoring by "Okaz" of flights on airlines for international travel revealed a significant drop in ticket prices to several countries, with the cost of a flight to northern Turkey reaching 900 riyals for a round trip per passenger, whereas it previously reached 2,100 riyals. In another airline, prices saw a significant drop, as the ticket price was previously 2,400 riyals and is currently 1,200 riyals, nearly half of its previous price.
