Kamel Idris was born in the village of Al-Zourat north of Dongola in northern Sudan and belongs to the Nubian community. He is known for his valuable contributions in the fields of intellectual property, having served as the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He obtained a Bachelor of Philosophy from Cairo University, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Khartoum, and a Ph.D. in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. His academic career is distinguished by a number of degrees in law, political science, international affairs, and finance from prestigious institutes for international studies in Geneva. Idris worked as a professor of philosophy and jurisprudence at Cairo University, a professor of jurisprudence at Ohio University, and a professor of international law and intellectual property law at the University of Khartoum. He was appointed as an honorary professor of law at Peking University. Before joining the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1982, Dr. Idris served as a member of the Sudanese diplomatic corps with the rank of ambassador. He was a member of the United Nations International Law Commission for two terms, the first from 1992 to 1996 and the second from 2000 to 2001. He served as a spokesperson and coordinator for the group of developing countries. Idris is fluent in three languages (Arabic, English, and French) and has knowledge of Spanish.
