Yesterday (Saturday), October 31, was World Cities Day, an event adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to enhance international community interest in cities, their quality of life, and meeting urban development needs.
It goes without saying that Saudi cities, with their quality of life, urban planning, and safety, have positioned themselves at the forefront of the world's most resilient cities facing challenges similar to those around the globe. Thanks to the Saudi vision, cities have witnessed a significant expansion in sustainability across various aspects such as housing, health, recreation, education, construction, and advanced planning, leading to the establishment of cities and neighborhoods filled with quality of life, safety, and well-being. Perhaps the most striking example that embodies Saudi Arabia's leadership and global standing is the recognition of 21 healthy cities that met 80 criteria of a global initiative celebrated by cities worldwide throughout October to raise awareness about urban issues and dialogue about their sustainable future.
Saudi cities topped the G20 countries in the safety index for 2025, according to data from the United Nations database on Sustainable Development Goals indicators. The index issued by the Statistics Authority showed that 97.7% of the total population feels safe walking alone at night in their residential areas, on a day when Saudi Arabia celebrates its vibrant cities, with integrated housing, services, urban development, quality of life for its residents, and the prosperity of its neighborhoods. The cities of the Kingdom meet the needs of their citizens and residents on its land, and the relevant authorities in charge of cities, municipalities, and governorates are working to develop neighborhoods, improve their facilities, enhance their connection to services, and build more integrated communities that support the stability of residents and meet their daily needs, in addition to urban governance and expanding digitization to facilitate transactions and urban development.
Those following the growth of Saudi cities can observe their urban transformations, infrastructure projects, and planning to align with the future and address environmental, economic, and social changes while each city retains its unique characteristics in construction and architecture, in a unique diversity that all comes together in an authentic national identity that began with traditional building and has reached skyscrapers that touch the sky.
