The sky over Mecca will witness the second alignment of the moon with the Kaaba tomorrow morning, during the year 2026, where it will be very close to the zenith above the Kaaba site, in a phenomenon that can be observed with the naked eye.
Waxing Crescent Phase
The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra, stated that the moon will reach its highest point at 7:50:31 AM local time, at an altitude of approximately 89.87 degrees, with its center at an angular distance of 7 minutes and 43 seconds from the zenith, appearing almost vertical above the Kaaba.
He explained that this phenomenon occurs due to the moon's inclination approaching the latitude of Mecca while crossing the local meridian, noting that the moon will be in the waxing crescent phase, with a brightness percentage of 31.8%, and at a distance of approximately 372,253 kilometers from the center of the Earth.
Visual Guide to the Direction of Mecca
Abu Zahra added that the presence of the sun in the sky makes the visibility of the moon less clear compared to nighttime alignments, pointing out that the first alignment of the year occurred on February 28, about seven months ago. He noted that the direction of the moon can be used as a visual guide to the direction of Mecca in locations where it is above the horizon, while considering the differences in the lunar view when making precise calculations, and the existence of more accurate means to determine the direction of the Qibla. It is worth mentioning that the timings of the moon's alignments and its altitude change due to its orbital motion and the changes in its celestial coordinates, making this phenomenon an opportunity to understand the relationship between the moon's movement, the Earth's rotation, the meridian, and latitude.
