Crying is not just a flood of tears; it is a complex biological response that arises from the interaction of the brain and the nervous system with emotions and feelings. Crying is not limited to sadness or pain; it can also occur in moments of joy, fear, stress, and deep emotional impact, serving as a natural means to express and cope with emotions. Tears do not undermine masculinity at all; they are a natural response for every normal human being. When a person experiences psychological stress or a strong emotional event, areas in the brain responsible for processing and regulating emotions react, and this response is reflected in the body through changes in breathing, heart rate, and tear production. Crying varies from person to person depending on the nature of the emotions and the circumstances they are going through, and its effects also differ; some people feel relief afterward, while others may feel exhausted or more emotionally sensitive. For some individuals, crying may be linked to alleviating stress and emotional responses, as it can be followed by a sense of calm and relief due to the body's gradual transition from a state of emotional arousal to a more stable state. Crying may also contribute to enhancing social communication, as it sometimes represents a non-verbal signal of the need for support and empathy. Crying does not necessarily indicate a psychological problem; in many cases, it is a natural response to various experiences and emotions. However, noticeable repetition or its continuous association with sadness or anxiety, or its impact on daily life, may warrant attention to the psychological state and understanding the underlying reasons, especially if accompanied by other symptoms affecting the person's life.
To explore the true causes of crying, its psychological and neurological dimensions, and its effects on humans, "Okaz" met with several specialists in psychiatry, neurology, and general medicine, who provided their insights and explanations regarding this human response.
The Crying Medicine!
Family medicine consultant Dr. Iman Al-Qurashi believes that crying is fundamentally a natural reaction in humans, and it may express sadness, joy, psychological pressure, or exhaustion. Notable repetition or occurrence without a clear reason may sometimes indicate the presence of a health or psychological problem that requires attention and evaluation.
She explained that some health disorders may affect mood and increase the desire to cry, indicating that thyroid and hormonal disorders may cause changes such as sadness, irritability, or mood swings. Additionally, some medications may affect psychological state as a side effect, especially if crying begins after starting a new treatment, which necessitates consulting a doctor.
Dr. Al-Qurashi added that a deficiency in certain vitamins, such as vitamin B12, may be associated with fatigue, mood changes, irritability, and increased emotional sensitivity, while a deficiency in vitamin D may be linked to mood disorders in some individuals. However, evaluating this should be part of a comprehensive health picture and not considered a direct and constant cause.
Confusion and Mood Changes
Dr. Iman Al-Qurashi points out that lack of sleep, stress, severe exhaustion, and poor nutrition are common reasons that affect the ability to control emotions, making a person more prone to crying and emotional outbursts. Additionally, some chronic diseases and neurological or hormonal conditions, along with chronic pain and ongoing fatigue, may increase emotional sensitivity.
She noted that crying is not usually a direct sign of a digestive disorder; however, some chronic digestive diseases may affect overall comfort, sleep, and nutritional absorption, which indirectly reflects on mood and psychological state.
She highlighted that low blood sugar levels may lead to irritability, stress, confusion, and mood changes, sometimes manifesting as unusual crying or emotional outbursts. Additionally, low blood pressure may cause fatigue, dizziness, and decreased concentration, which increases psychological fragility in some individuals.
She confirmed that chronic pain and ongoing inflammation may affect both the body and psychological state, leading to decreased energy, mood changes, and increased emotional sensitivity, which may make crying more frequent.
Dr. Al-Qurashi urged consulting a doctor when crying occurs repeatedly without a clear reason, or persists for long periods, especially if accompanied by sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, severe fatigue, or other symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, weight loss, or hormone-related signs, to ensure that there are no organic or psychological causes that require treatment.
Surgical Intervention... Is It the Solution?
Neurology consultant Dr. Saqaf Alawi Al-Saqaf believes that crying and laughing are emotional responses resulting from natural neurological reflections, which humans use to express their emotional or physical state, whether in feelings of joy, sadness, or pain. These behaviors are not exclusive to humans; they also appear in some animals.
Dr. Al-Saqaf explained to "Okaz" that exceeding the normal limits of crying or laughing related to a situation or the reason behind it necessitates searching for causes and addressing them, whether they are related to psychological or physical pain or a disturbance in the psychological state.
He confirmed that such cases do not require surgical interventions; rather, they depend on appropriate treatment according to the cause, whether through medication or psychological and social therapy sessions, which help restore psychological balance and improve the patient's overall condition.
Weakness or Expression?
Psychologist Nadia Al-Aqeel told "Okaz" that crying is a natural human response to express sadness, pain, fear, anger, or anxiety. Crying without an apparent reason does not necessarily mean it is unjustified; it may result from repressed feelings or painful memories that the person has not been able to express.
She explained that the difference in the speed of crying among individuals is due to personality traits; those who are more sensitive and affected by situations and emotions tend to shed tears more quickly. Upbringing and culture also play an important role, as some societies view crying as a weakness, while others see it as a natural expression of feelings.
Psychologist Al-Aqeel added that there are physiological and hormonal factors that explain the differences between genders. Women tend to cry more due to higher levels of the hormone prolactin, while elevated testosterone levels in men inhibit crying. Therefore, men often cry in harsh situations or deep shocks, while women may also cry due to daily life pressures or frustrations.
Do Men Cry?
Psychologist Al-Aqeel pointed out that some incorrect parenting methods, such as preventing a child from crying or repeating phrases like "men don't cry," may lead to repressed emotions and leave psychological effects that extend into adulthood, such as difficulty in emotional expression, aggressive behavior, or anxiety and depression.
She indicated that crying is a healthy way to relieve stress and regulate emotions, and that repressing emotions for long periods may increase psychological pressures and lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and muscle pain. She noted that psychological therapy sometimes utilizes crying to help the patient release their feelings after trauma or loss, contributing to restoring psychological balance and calming the nervous system. Al-Aqeel concluded by emphasizing the importance of containing children when they cry, listening to their feelings, and making them feel safe, then teaching them to express sadness, anger, or fear in a healthy way, which enhances their proper psychological and emotional growth.
Is It Related to Tooth Decay?
Dental and gum disease specialist Dr. Mona Fahmy believes that crying itself is not a direct cause of dental or gum problems, explaining that some temporary effects may accompany it, especially when it occurs repeatedly for long periods or is associated with stress and psychological pressure.
She explained to "Okaz" that crying does not directly cause dry mouth; however, the stress and anxiety accompanying it may temporarily lead to reduced saliva production and affect the function of the salivary glands, while mouth breathing during crying may increase the feeling of dryness.
She clarified that reduced saliva production is not linked to crying itself, but rather to the accompanying psychological state, as anxiety and stress can temporarily affect the function of the salivary glands. She warned that chronic mouth breathing may increase dry mouth, raising the likelihood of plaque and tartar buildup, tooth decay, and gum inflammation.
Dr. Mona confirmed that there is no direct relationship between repeated crying and tooth decay, but the combination of chronic dry mouth, neglecting dental hygiene, or consuming excessive sugars to alleviate stress may increase the risk factors for developing cavities.
Jaw Muscle Tension
Dental and gum disease specialist Dr. Mona Fahmy points out that the stress and anxiety accompanying crying may lead to jaw muscle tension or teeth grinding, which may cause pain, headaches, or fatigue in the jaw muscles, emphasizing that the connection in this case is more related to stress than to crying itself.
Regarding the gums, she explained that moderate crying does not cause inflammation, urging the search for other causes when persistent irritation, bleeding, or swelling occurs, such as tartar buildup, gum disease, or a localized problem.
She noted that there is no direct relationship between crying and temporomandibular joint disorders; however, the psychological stress accompanying repeated crying may increase the usual pressure on the teeth or tension in the jaw muscles, which may exacerbate symptoms in individuals with a pre-existing issue.
Concerning the effect of prolonged crying on mouth acidity, she mentioned that minor and temporary changes may occur due to changes in saliva production rates and mouth breathing; however, this does not mean that crying makes the mouth acidic to the extent that it causes tooth decay, and that maintaining saliva flow and oral hygiene are the two most important factors in protecting teeth.
Dr. Fahmy emphasized that emotions and psychological state indirectly affect oral health, stressing the importance of paying attention to mental health, alongside daily dental care, drinking water, and regular visits to the dentist to maintain oral and dental health.
