The calm between Washington and Tehran did not last long, as days after discussing a new opportunity for diplomacy, Iranian escalation brought the crisis back to square one, with increasing signs that the negotiation process is on the brink of collapse.
The Iranian missile attack on sites housing American forces, along with Tehran's hardening stance on the Strait of Hormuz issue and its abandonment of the "memorandum of understanding," undermined the efforts of mediators to try to restore order and resume the negotiation process. Thus, current data indicates that both sides still prefer a policy of "pressure under the threshold of war," as Iran continues to use its military tools to demonstrate its ability to influence regional equations, while the United States attempts to maintain military and economic pressure without engaging in an open war, keeping a window for dialogue if the right conditions arise.
There is no doubt that the continuation of this approach carries significant risks, as any miscalculation or an unaccounted field incident, such as renewed targeting, could push both sides into a broader confrontation that is difficult to contain. Additionally, the ongoing stalemate in the Hormuz negotiations threatens to keep the region in a state of constant tension.
It is certain that Iranian escalation has brought the crisis with Washington back to the first square, showing that the fundamental disagreements have not been resolved but rather temporarily postponed.
Amid military pressures and diplomatic attempts, the chances for de-escalation seem distant, as each side clings to its political cards and conditions.
