The Northern Borders region is one of the most prominent areas in the Kingdom in terms of the diversity of traditional handicrafts passed down through generations, such as the weaving of Sadu, the making of tents, spinning, decorated garments, handmade artworks, and traditional perfumes.
The region is witnessing a growing economic movement in handicraft projects, especially among older women who carry a rich heritage in handicrafts, making these traditional professions some of the most notable features of the local economic activity in the area.
The popular market, which opened about ten years ago, has become a main station for supporting craftswomen, as fixed locations have been designated for them to showcase their products. Craftswoman Um Nada stated that her participation in the market has contributed to the development of her business activity. Meanwhile, Um Saud pointed out that these professions have become a primary source of income and have enhanced the presence of women in the local economic scene.
On a cultural level, the Culture and Arts Association in the region showcased an artistic piece made of "Sadu" that is 17 meters long, created by one of the craftswomen over several months, woven with precision and adorned with traditional lines and harmonious colors that reflect the aesthetics of this traditional craft.
This movement is accompanied by developmental efforts led by the management of the popular market, which includes organizing training courses in areas such as buying and selling, saving, e-marketing, and self-development, contributing to empowering craftswomen and enhancing their efficiency in dealing with the requirements of modern trade.
Craftswomen have also been given the opportunity to participate in local festivals organized by several governmental entities, aimed at highlighting these crafts and introducing them to new generations, ensuring their continuity and protection from extinction.
This coincides with the announcement of "2025 as the Year of Handicrafts" in the Kingdom, celebrating the cultural and creative value represented by these crafts and shedding light on Saudi handmade creations both locally and globally.
