Oil prices rose by about 2% at the close of trading yesterday (Monday), after recovering from earlier losses during the session, amid fluctuations in global markets and investors' anticipation of developments in energy supplies.
Brent crude futures increased by $1.93, or 1.8%, settling at $106.65 per barrel, marking the highest closing level since September 15.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures also rose by $1.89, or about 2%, reaching $93.74 per barrel.
Sharp Fluctuations During Trading
The oil markets experienced notable fluctuations during the (Monday) session, as prices fell at the beginning of trading before reversing direction and closing higher.
The movements came at a time when investors are assessing the likelihood of an increase in global oil supply, alongside indicators related to commercial inventory levels and supply-demand balance.
New Oil Price Forecasts
In this context, Goldman Sachs raised its forecast for Brent crude prices in December to $90 per barrel, compared to its previous forecast of $85.
The bank expects the average price of West Texas Intermediate crude to reach about $81 per barrel in December 2026, and to decline to $73 during 2027.
It noted that the price differential between Brent and U.S. crude reflects, among other factors, the rising shipping costs between the United States and Europe.
Markets Await Supply Developments
Global energy markets are monitoring developments in Russian supplies, alongside efforts by oil companies to restore production at some offshore facilities in the Gulf of Mexico following weather disruptions.
Global inventory levels and demand for petroleum products, especially diesel, remain key factors that traders are watching to assess price trends in the coming period.
