Gold prices dropped by about 3% today, as rising oil prices exacerbated inflation concerns and bolstered expectations for the Federal Reserve (the U.S. central bank) to raise interest rates again. Spot gold fell 2.88% to $4,161.31 per ounce. U.S. gold futures also declined 2.88% to $4,196.90 per ounce.
Bond Yields
As for other precious metals, silver fell 4.88% in spot transactions to $61.16 per ounce. Platinum decreased by 3.17% to $1,725.65. Palladium dropped 3.44% to $1,226.93. Tim Waterer, a senior market analyst at KCM Trade, stated: "The continued rise in bond yields coupled with higher oil prices remains a hurdle for gold, and oil prices have increased amid mixed signals regarding oil flows, keeping inflation at the forefront of investors' concerns."
Interest Rates
The U.S. central bank raised interest rates earlier this month by a quarter percentage point to a range between 3.75% and 4%. According to the "FedWatch" tool, traders expect a 66% chance of a U.S. interest rate hike next October. Rising energy prices can fuel inflation by increasing costs across all sectors of the economy. Gold is widely viewed as a hedge against inflation, but a high-interest-rate environment increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.
