The German Bundestag approved today (Friday) the second package of temporary reductions in the taxes imposed on gasoline and diesel for this year, at a total cost of 2.5 billion euros (equivalent to 2.85 billion dollars) to be borne equally by the federal treasury and the states of the country.
Under this legislative decision, the government will reduce the taxes imposed on a liter of gasoline and diesel by 0.17 euros (about 0.20 dollars) starting from the beginning of October until the end of December, to help citizens cope with the sharply rising fuel prices due to the war in Iran.
The legislative council is expected to refer the law to the Federal Council for final approval later today to ensure that the package comes into effect on schedule, according to Western media reports.
What does this mean? Berlin's resort to renewing temporary support reflects increasing political and economic pressures to protect purchasing power, and while the previous reduction proved to be temporarily effective in calming inflation, these measures remain short-term painkillers that burden the public budget without addressing the root causes of the energy supply crisis.
