U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bisson expects oil prices to drop to as low as $40 a barrel after the conflict with Iran ends, which could in turn affect bond yields that have risen to their highest levels in years.
Bisson said in an interview with Steve Bannon aired today (Friday) that the oil market may experience a significant surplus after the conflict, with new quantities entering the market, predicting that crude prices will range between $40 and $50 a barrel.
Brent crude finished trading today above $96 a barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) surpassed $91, following the military strikes exchanged between the United States and Iran earlier in the week.
Bisson pointed to the strong correlation between oil prices and sovereign bond yields, stating that borrowing costs have recorded the highest correlation ever with black gold.
In a related context, Bisson downplayed the significance of the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the largest of its kind in the world, proposing to reduce its holdings of Treasury bonds, saying it is only seeking to improve its profits by investing in other U.S. assets.
