The Chinese yuan has risen to its highest level in three and a half years (42 months) against the dollar, supported by a stronger-than-expected reference exchange rate set by the People's Bank of China, and continued dollar weakness.
The stronger rate
The People's Bank of China set the reference exchange rate at 6.7807 yuan to the dollar, the strongest since February 2023, and in the spot market, the yuan rose to 6.7180 yuan to the dollar. The yuan has appreciated by more than 4% against the dollar since the beginning of the year, making it one of the best-performing Asian currencies, while markets are awaiting U.S. jobs data tomorrow (Friday) for further indications on U.S. interest rate policy.
The Chinese central bank allows the yuan to move within a ±2% range around the reference rate, making the daily rate setting one of its most important tools for guiding the currency's movement against the dollar.
Market Monitoring
In the liquidity market, the People's Bank of China did not conduct reverse repos for seven days today, indicating a lack of demand from primary dealers. With reverse repos worth 103 billion yuan maturing, this led to a net withdrawal of liquidity of the same amount from the financial system. The reference rate setting comes as markets monitor the yuan's movements and Chinese monetary policy, at a time when authorities are balancing between supporting the currency and maintaining sufficient liquidity within the financial system.
