Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the "OPEC+" group will continue to exert a strong influence on oil markets, amid rising production levels, emphasizing the group's ongoing importance to the global market. Novak stated that fuel supplies in Russia stabilized over the past week, with a continued limited shortage in some areas, according to Russian news agencies.
Price Movements
In terms of price movements, oil prices fell slightly today, as investors assessed the state of uncertainty surrounding renewed military strikes between the United States and Iran and their impact on Middle Eastern supplies. Brent crude futures dropped by 35 cents or 0.37% to $95.28 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell by 16 cents or 0.18% to $90.85.
Crude Fluctuations
The latest attacks represent the largest exchange of fire between the United States and Iran since last July, coinciding with the war entering its seventh month. Brent and U.S. crude fluctuated between gains of up to two dollars per barrel and losses of one dollar per barrel during the last trading session. The session witnessed the highest levels for both indices since July 24.
Preliminary Indicators
Market analyst Tony Sycamore noted in a memo: "Oil prices have retreated amid preliminary indicators of a de-escalation in the latest tensions, with no confirmed exchange of fire since around midday yesterday (Wednesday) Sydney time." Sycamore added: "If the de-escalation continues, which is highly questionable, it won't be long before oil shipments exiting the strait, via ships that turn off their transponders and transfers from one vessel to another, return to the levels we saw at the end of last week."
