Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration released today revealed a surprising increase in U.S. crude oil inventories, excluding barrels in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, during the past week, marking the largest weekly rise since January 2023, alongside a decline in exports.
According to the data, crude inventories rose by 17.4 million barrels to 424.4 million barrels during the week ending August 7, the highest level since June 5.
Weak Exports
Matt Smith, director of commodity research at "Kepler," stated: "The continued weakness in crude exports, coupled with a massive surge in imports, has resulted in the second-largest increase in crude inventories in history, with most of the increase occurring on the U.S. Gulf Coast."
Crude inventories on the U.S. Gulf Coast rose at the fastest weekly pace since January 2023, and inventories at the delivery hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, increased by 1.6 million barrels.
Extension of Losses
U.S. crude oil and Brent futures initially extended their losses following the release of the data, which showed the large and unexpected increase in inventories, before stabilizing with little change.
U.S. crude oil exports fell to their lowest level since November 2025, at 3.06 million barrels per day, and recorded their lowest levels since the beginning of the war with Iran, during which the United States enhanced its role as a major global oil supplier to fill supply gaps caused by a shortage of crude coming from the Middle East.
