Gold and precious metals prices strengthened their gains during Wednesday's trading, supported by a decline in the dollar and falling Treasury yields, while investors are awaiting developments in the Middle East and what implications they may have on inflation and interest rate trends.
Gold prices surged by about 4%, trading above $4,300.
Additional Support
These gains came amid hopes for the success of diplomatic efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran, and the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which would restore global oil flows to normal levels and limit the inflationary repercussions of the conflict.
Precious metals prices received additional support after data showed a slowdown in U.S. private sector job growth in July, which limits the likelihood of monetary tightening due to concerns about a weak labor market, as investors continue to assess the trajectory of monetary policy.
Monetary Policy
Gold prices had risen slightly in morning trading today, with the dollar declining, as investors awaited U.S. jobs data for indications on the next steps the Federal Reserve (the U.S. central bank) will take regarding monetary policy.
Spot gold increased by 0.1% to $4,081.09 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures fell by 0.4% to $4,137.20.
The dollar continued to decline, making dollar-denominated metals more attractive to holders of other currencies.
As for other metals, silver rose by 0.2% in spot trading to $59.61 per ounce, while platinum fell by 0.2% to $1,732 and palladium decreased by 0.4% to $1,348.
