The global energy markets have reignited amid the drums of war in the Middle East, as oil prices surged by more than 3% following the escalation of direct military confrontation between Washington and Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz, the most important waterway for global energy supplies. This escalating tension came after Iranian attacks targeted commercial vessels, to which the United States responded with intensive airstrikes that shook southern Iran.
The figures from global stock exchanges reflected an immediate concern over the disruption of oil shipments; Brent crude futures rose by $2.67 (or 3.51%) to reach $78.68 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude followed suit, rising by $2.48 (or 3.47%) to settle at $73.89 per barrel.
On the ground, U.S. Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins confirmed that Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces opened fire on commercial ships crossing the strait, noting in statements reported by CNN that U.S. aircraft successfully intervened to shoot down an Iranian cruise missile and an attack drone. In a provocative move, the Pentagon announced a new wave of strikes deep inside Iran, and Central Command clarified via the platform X that the attacks began under direct orders from President Donald Trump aimed at undermining Tehran's capabilities and holding it accountable for targeting civilian navigation.
On the other side, provinces in southern Iran experienced a tense night; official and local media reported hearing a series of violent explosions that shook strategic areas overlooking the Strait of Hormuz early Monday. These explosions, which exceeded 15 in number, were concentrated in the west of Bandar Abbas, in addition to other strikes targeting the vicinity of the village of Tahroei in Sirik, the city of Jask, and Qeshm Island, amid an official blackout from Iranian authorities regarding the extent of the damage or the nature of the targeted sites.
