ارتفعت أسعار السكر العالمية خلال تعاملات الإثنين مع تجاوز برميل النفط نحو 119 دولاراً، نتيجة استمرار اضطرابات الإمدادات الناجمة عن الحرب في الشرق الأوسط، ما أثار مخاوف من أن مصانع قصب السكر البرازيلية ستنتج كميات أكبر من الإيثانول وإمدادات أقل من السكر.

وصعدت العقود الآجلة للسكر الخام تسليم مايو القادم بنسبة 1.75% لتصل إلى 14.35 سنت للرطل، في تمام الساعة 1:45 مساء بتوقيت مكة المكرمة، بعد أن سجلت زيادة ناهزت 3% في وقت سابق من الجلسة.
ويعزى هذا إلى النمو المتوقع في الطلب على «الإيثانول» كمصدر بديل للطاقة مع صعود أسعار الخام بشكل حاد. وأوضح ألبرتو بيكسوتو (مدير إحدى الشركات المتخصصة) أن الطلب على الوقود الحيوي يتزايد مع تضاعف أسعار النفط منذ بداية العام الحالي.
Global sugar prices rose during trading on Monday as oil prices surpassed $119 per barrel, due to ongoing supply disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East, raising concerns that Brazilian sugarcane mills will produce larger quantities of ethanol and fewer supplies of sugar.

Raw sugar futures for May delivery increased by 1.75% to reach 14.35 cents per pound at 1:45 PM Mecca time, after recording an increase of nearly 3% earlier in the session.
This is attributed to the expected growth in demand for "ethanol" as an alternative energy source with crude prices sharply rising. Alberto Pexoto (manager of a specialized company) explained that the demand for biofuels is increasing as oil prices have doubled since the beginning of this year.
