دعا الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب مجلس الشيوخ إلى إلغاء التعطيل، حتى تتمكن الأغلبية الجمهورية من تجاوز الديمقراطيين وإعادة فتح الحكومة الفيدرالية.
ونشر ترمب على منصته للتواصل الاجتماعي «تروث سوشيال» ليل الخميس قائلًا: «الخيار واضح بدء الخيار النووي، تخلصوا من التعطيل».
يذكر أن التعطيل «فيليباستر» هو تكتيك طويل الأمد في مجلس الشيوخ لتأخير أو منع التصويت على التشريعات عن طريق إبقاء النقاش مستمرًا، ويتطلب هذا 60 صوتًا في مجلس الشيوخ بالكامل للتغلب على التعطيل، ما يمنح الديمقراطيين قوة للمراقبة على الأغلبية الجمهورية ذات المقاعد الـ 53، وهو ما أدى إلى بدء الإغلاق الحكومي في الأول من شهر أكتوبر مع بداية السنة المالية الجديدة، وفقًا لوكالة أسوشيتد برس (أ ب).
U.S. President Donald Trump called on the Senate to end the filibuster so that the Republican majority can bypass the Democrats and reopen the federal government.
Trump posted on his social media platform "Truth Social" late Thursday, saying: "The choice is clear, start the nuclear option, get rid of the filibuster."
It is worth noting that the filibuster is a long-standing tactic in the Senate to delay or prevent a vote on legislation by keeping the debate ongoing, and it requires 60 votes in the entire Senate to overcome the filibuster, which gives the Democrats leverage over the Republican majority of 53 seats. This has led to the government shutdown that began on October 1 with the start of the new fiscal year, according to the Associated Press (AP).
