أعلن الاتحاد الأوروبي، اليوم، أنه سيضاعف الرسوم الجمركية على واردات الصلب إلى 50%، لتتساوى مع التعريفات الأمريكية.
وذكرت رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية أورسولا فون دير لاين، أن قطاع الصلب القوي والمنخفض الانبعاثات ضروري لتنافسية الاتحاد الأوروبي وأمنه الاقتصادي واستقلاله الإستراتيجي، مؤكدة أن الطاقة الإنتاجية المفرطة عالميا تلحق ضررا بصناعة البلاد.
وتتضمن الخطة، خفض الحصص المعفاة من الرسوم بنسبة 47% لتصل إلى 18.3 مليون طن متري، في محاولة لمعالجة مشكلة الإنتاج العالمي الزائد وتراجع الإنتاج الأوروبي الذي أدى إلى تعطيل ثلث الطاقة الإنتاجية للقطاع.
طاقة فائضة
وأخيرا، كان يدرس الاتحاد الأوروبي زيادة التعريفات الجمركية على واردات الصلب في محاولة لمساعدة المنتجين المحليين على التعامل مع تأثير الطاقة الإنتاجية الفائضة في آسيا، إضافة إلى الحواجز التجارية الجديدة التي فرضتها الولايات المتحدة.
وقال رئيس المفوضية الأوروبية للازدهار والإستراتيجية الصناعية في الاتحاد الأوروبي ستيفان سيجورن إن المفوضية، الذراع التنفيذية للاتحاد الأوروبي، «ستقترح آلية طويلة الأجل من شأنها أيضا خفض حصص الاتحاد الأوربي الحالية من الصلب الأجنبي بنحو النصف».

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that a strong and low-emission steel sector is essential for the EU's competitiveness, economic security, and strategic independence, emphasizing that global overcapacity is harming the industry in the country.
The plan includes reducing tariff-free quotas by 47% to 18.3 million metric tons, in an effort to address the issue of global overproduction and the decline in European production that has led to a third of the sector's production capacity being disrupted.
Excess Capacity
Finally, the European Union was considering increasing customs duties on steel imports in an attempt to help local producers cope with the impact of excess production capacity in Asia, in addition to the new trade barriers imposed by the United States.
European Commission Chief for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy Stefan Siegjorn stated that the Commission, the EU's executive arm, "will propose a long-term mechanism that will also reduce the EU's current quotas for foreign steel by about half."
