أخفق مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي مجدداً في تمرير مشروعي قانون متنافسين لتمويل الحكومة؛ ما يعني أن الإغلاق الجزئي المستمر منذ ثلاثة أيام سيتواصل إلى الأسبوع القادم على الأقل.
المقترح الجمهوري المعروف بـ«القرار النظيف»، كان يهدف إلى تمديد التمويل بالمستويات الحالية حتى أواخر نوفمبر القادم، بينما تضمن مشروع الديمقراطيين بنوداً إضافية أبرزها تمويل للرعاية الصحية، لكن كليهما لم ينجحا في الحصول على الأصوات الكافية.
ويستمر هذا الإخفاق بعد سلسلة من المحاولات منذ عشية الإغلاق وحتى اليوم الثالث منه، مما يجعل تمديد الأزمة أمراً شبه مؤكد حتى الإثنين القادم، وفقاً لتقرير نشرته شبكة «CNBC»، واطلعت عليه «العربية Business».
ويتوقع، أن يؤدي الإغلاق إلى تعليق عمل نحو 750 ألف موظف فيدرالي، وإغلاق مؤقت للعديد من المكاتب والبرامج الحكومية.
فرصة غير مسبوقة
وفيما لم يسبق أن أسفر إغلاق سابق عن تسريحات دائمة، حذرت إدارة الرئيس ترمب، التي تسعى بالفعل لتقليص حجم الحكومة، من احتمال تنفيذ عمليات فصل واسعة للموظفين الفيدراليين هذه المرة.
واعتبر الرئيس ترمب أن الديمقراطيين منحوه «فرصة غير مسبوقة» لفرض تخفيضات جديدة على ما وصفها بـ«وكالات الديمقراطيين».
وجاء هذا التصعيد بعد أن جمدت إدارة ترمب الأربعاء الماضي 18 مليار دولار من أموال وزارة النقل، كانت مخصصة لمشاريع بنية تحتية ضخمة في نيويورك، إضافة إلى إلغاء وزارة الطاقة مشاريع متعلقة بالمناخ بقيمة 8 مليارات دولار في 16 ولاية فازت بها المرشحة الديمقراطية كامالا هاريس خلال انتخابات 2024.
The U.S. Senate has once again failed to pass two competing bills to fund the government, meaning that the partial shutdown, which has been ongoing for three days, will continue at least until next week.
The Republican proposal known as the "clean resolution" aimed to extend funding at current levels until late November, while the Democrats' bill included additional provisions, most notably funding for healthcare, but neither succeeded in garnering enough votes.
This failure follows a series of attempts from the eve of the shutdown to the third day of it, making an extension of the crisis almost certain until next Monday, according to a report published by CNBC, which was reviewed by Al Arabiya Business.
It is expected that the shutdown will suspend the work of about 750,000 federal employees and lead to the temporary closure of many government offices and programs.
Unprecedented Opportunity
While no previous shutdown has resulted in permanent layoffs, the Trump administration, which is already seeking to downsize the government, has warned of the possibility of widespread federal employee layoffs this time.
President Trump has stated that the Democrats have given him an "unprecedented opportunity" to impose new cuts on what he described as "Democrat agencies."
This escalation came after the Trump administration froze $18 billion in funds from the Department of Transportation, which were allocated for massive infrastructure projects in New York, in addition to the Department of Energy canceling climate-related projects worth $8 billion in 16 states won by Democratic candidate Kamala Harris during the 2024 elections.
