ضمت قائمة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب المختصرة للمرشحين لخلافة جيروم باول في رئاسة مجلس الاحتياطي الفيدرالي مستشاره كيفن هاسيت، ورئيس المجلس السابق كيفن وارش، وعضو المجلس الحالي كريستوفر والر.
وقال ترمب لصحفيين في البيت الأبيض إن الثلاثة هم المرشحون النهائيون لرئاسة مجلس الاحتياطي الفيدرالي، مضيفاً أنه يفكر في سكوت بيسنت أيضاً، لكن وزير الخزانة لم يُبدِ اهتماماً.
وأكد بيسنت الذي كان برفقة الرئيس في المكتب البيضاوي عدم اهتمامه.
3 مرشحين
وأضاف ترمب: «كان لدي أربعة مرشحين. الآن أتحدث عن ثلاثة. قال لي بيسنت: لن أغادر».
وأفاد الرئيس أنه ينوي تعيين رئيس جديد للمجلس يتوافق أكثر مع مساعيه لخفض أسعار الفائدة بسرعة، منتقداً باول بشدة لتأخره في اتخاذ إجراءات بشأن تكاليف الاقتراض، وما قال إنه إضرار بمشتري المنازل من خلال رفع أسعار الفائدة على الرهن العقاري.
وأبقى المجلس برئاسة باول على أسعار الفائدة دون تغيير طوال العام، خوفاً من أن تعيد رسوم ترمب الجمركية إشعال التضخم، غير أن مخاوفه تحولت أخيراً إلى التركيز بشكل أكبر على تباطؤ سوق العمل.
الاختيار الأقرب
وهاسيت من أشد المدافعين عن رسوم ترمب الجمركية وسياساته الأخرى، ويتفق مع ترمب في أن إبقاء المجلس على أسعار الفائدة مرتفعة ليس مناسباً. ودعا وارش مراراً إلى «تغيير النظام» في مجلس الاحتياطي الفيدرالي.
أما والر الذي كان يدير قسم الأبحاث ببنك الاحتياطي الفيدرالي في سانت لويس قبل أن يختاره ترمب لعضوية المجلس في 2020، فسيكون الاختيار الأقرب من داخل المؤسسة.

The list of U.S. President Donald Trump's short-listed candidates to succeed Jerome Powell as the head of the Federal Reserve includes his advisor Kevin Hassett, former board chairman Kevin Warsh, and current board member Christopher Waller.
Trump told reporters at the White House that the three are the final candidates for the Federal Reserve chairmanship, adding that he is also considering Scott Piesen, but the Treasury Secretary has shown no interest.
Piesen, who was with the president in the Oval Office, confirmed his lack of interest.

Trump added, "I had four candidates. Now I'm talking about three. Piesen told me: I will not leave."
The president stated that he intends to appoint a new chair who aligns more with his efforts to rapidly lower interest rates, harshly criticizing Powell for delaying action on borrowing costs, which he said has harmed homebuyers by raising mortgage rates.
The board, under Powell's leadership, kept interest rates unchanged throughout the year, fearing that Trump's tariffs would reignite inflation, but his concerns have shifted to a greater focus on the slowdown in the labor market.
The Closest Choice
Hassett is one of the strongest defenders of Trump's tariffs and other policies, agreeing with Trump that keeping the board's interest rates high is not appropriate. Warsh has repeatedly called for a "system change" at the Federal Reserve.
As for Waller, who was managing the research department at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis before Trump appointed him to the board in 2020, he would be the closest choice from within the institution.
