President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell today, calling for an immediate cut in interest rates.
Trump explained in a post on the "Truth Social" platform that he is considering allowing a lawsuit against Powell over what he described as mismanagement of the Federal Reserve's building development project.
Trump said, "Three billion dollars for renovating the Fed's headquarters? It was supposed to be a $50 million renovation only."
He added, "Powell has caused significant damage to the economy due to his delay in decision-making, and the strong performance of the U.S. economy has helped to overcome the effects of restrictive policies."
Recently, President Trump announced that he has a list of four candidates for the Federal Reserve chairmanship, excluding Treasury Secretary Scott Pruitt from consideration, stating that he prefers to remain in his current position.
The current chairman, Jerome Powell, has a mandate that ends in May 2026, amid repeated criticism from Trump for what he considers a slowdown in interest rate cuts.
Trump mentioned during an interview that both his chief economic advisor Kevin Hassett and former Federal Reserve board member Kevin Warsh are among the top candidates, along with two other names he did not disclose.
Trump has an additional opportunity to nominate a new member to the Federal Reserve board following the resignation of Adriana Kugler earlier this month, as he continues to push for a change in monetary policy amid economic uncertainty resulting from the trade war.
It is worth noting that President Trump recently stated in a post on Truth Social: "Jerome, who is way too late, the stubborn fool, must cut interest rates significantly now; if he continues to refuse, the board must take charge and do what everyone knows needs to be done."
