أعلنت ستة مصادر دبلوماسية مطلعة أن مفاوضي الاتحاد الأوروبي لم يفلحوا حتى الآن في تحقيق انفراجة في المفاوضات التجارية مع إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، وقد يسعون الآن إلى تمديد الوضع الراهن لتجنب رفع الرسوم الجمركية.
ونقلت المصادر عن المفوضية قولها إن الولايات المتحدة كانت قد طرحت في مرحلة ما فرض رسوم جمركية 17% على واردات الاتحاد الأوروبي من الأغذية الزراعية.
وقال اثنان من دبلوماسيي الاتحاد الأوروبي: «إن المفوضية تبذل على ما يبدو جهوداً أكبر نحو الخيار الأول، لتمديد الوضع الراهن، ثم ستسعى إلى مزيد من التفاوض».
وأضاف متحدث باسم المفوضية الأوروبية: «تم إحراز تقدم نحو اتفاق مبدئي خلال أحدث جولة من المفاوضات التي جرت هذا الأسبوع، وبعد مناقشة الوضع الراهن مع الدول الأعضاء في الاتحاد الأوروبي، ستعاود المفوضية الآن التواصل مع الولايات المتحدة بشأن المضمون مطلع الأسبوع القادم».
وكان الاتحاد الأوروبي قد تخلى بالفعل عن آماله في إبرام اتفاق تجاري شامل قبل المهلة التي حددها ترمب وتنتهي في التاسع من يوليو الجاري، لكن بعد المحادثات في واشنطن لم يتضح ما إذا كان التكتل سيضمن حتى التوصل إلى اتفاق أخف من حيث المبدأ.
وأبلغت المفوضية الأوروبية مبعوثي التكتل بعد ظهر اليوم بأنها تعتقد أن الولايات المتحدة على استعداد لإيقاف الرسوم الجمركية المعمول بها حالياً للشركاء الذين توصلت معهم إلى اتفاق مبدئي، مع إمكانية تخفيف الرسوم الجمركية لاحقاً.
ودون اتفاق مبدئي، سترتفع الرسوم الجمركية الأمريكية واسعة النطاق على معظم الواردات من نسبتها الحالية البالغة 10% إلى المعدل الذي حدده ترمب في الثاني من أبريل الماضي. وفي حالة الاتحاد الأوروبي، ستكون هذه النسبة 20%.

Six informed diplomatic sources announced that EU negotiators have not yet succeeded in achieving a breakthrough in trade negotiations with the administration of President Donald Trump, and they may now seek to extend the status quo to avoid raising tariffs.
The sources quoted the Commission as saying that the United States had at one point proposed imposing a 17% tariff on EU imports of agricultural food products.
Two EU diplomats stated: "The Commission seems to be making greater efforts towards the first option, extending the status quo, and then it will seek further negotiations."
A spokesperson for the European Commission added: "Progress has been made towards a preliminary agreement during the latest round of negotiations that took place this week, and after discussing the status quo with EU member states, the Commission will now resume communication with the United States regarding the content early next week."
The European Union had already abandoned hopes of reaching a comprehensive trade agreement before the deadline set by Trump, which ends on July 9, but after talks in Washington, it was unclear whether the bloc would even secure a lighter agreement in principle.
The European Commission informed the bloc's envoys this afternoon that it believes the United States is willing to suspend the current tariffs for partners with whom it has reached a preliminary agreement, with the possibility of reducing tariffs later.
Without a preliminary agreement, U.S. tariffs on most imports will rise from their current rate of 10% to the rate set by Trump on April 2. In the case of the European Union, this rate would be 20%.
