Six Arab films have entered the race for the Best International Feature Film award at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, carrying themes that intersect with war, migration, memory, and mental health, in a presence that transcends linguistic unity to a clear diversity in structure and cinematic styles.
Egypt is participating with the film "Al-Qisas" by director Abu Bakr Shawky, which follows a romantic relationship between an Egyptian pianist and an Austrian woman, through transformations that extend from the 1960s to the 1980s. Morocco has chosen "Frawla" by director Leila Marrakchi, about two seasonal workers facing exploitation in the fields of Andalusia, after its screening in the "Un Certain Regard" section at the Cannes Film Festival.
Palestine is represented by the documentary "Citizen Osama" by Ahmed Hassouna, filmed in northern Gaza, while Iraq presents "No Paradise If I Kill You, Woman" by Halqot Mustafa, about a Kurdish sniper searching for her missing sister. Jordan participates with "Gharq" by Zain Dri'i, which approaches the mental health crisis within a family, while Algeria has selected the horror film "Ruqya" by Yanis Qusaim, based on the memory of the "Black Decade." These selections do not mean that the films are officially nominated for the award; the shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 15, before five final nominees are chosen on January 21. The chances of the films remain linked to the strength of American distribution, presence at festivals, and the ability to manage voting campaigns that go beyond the quality of the work alone.
