After nearly half a century of silence, the echoes of "The Dark Nightingale" still inhabit the walls of Zamalek neighborhood. In an exceptional tour documented by the camera of the program "With You, Mona El Shazly," the family of the late Abdel Halim Hafez opened the doors to his historic apartment in the "Zahra Al-Jazeera" building on Bahaa El-Din Qarqosh Street, overlooking the Fish Garden; revealing details of a space that extended over 650 square meters, which witnessed the peak of his stardom and the birth of his musical legend.
Political Décor and Wings of Secrets
Media personality Mona El Shazly revealed that Halim divided his apartment in a smart geometric style into two separate wings, one dedicated to family privacy and the other for receiving his friends among the prominent artists of Egypt and the Arab world. Notably, the coordination of the décor and the selection of classic colors was done with the participation of the famous politician Fouad Pasha Sarag Eldin.
Mohamed Shabana, the nephew of the nightingale, along with Abdel Halim El Shenawy, the grandson of his sister Aliya, confirmed that the family imposed strict protection on the apartment to keep its furniture and colors unchanged, as they relied on the children of the original craftsmen and workers who established it long ago to restore the parquet wood and the oil paintings on the walls adorned with hand-painted musical notes and violins.
Behind the Scenes of the "Rehearsals"
The salon of the apartment transformed over the decades into a miniature theater that witnessed the birth of monumental artistic works such as "The Coffee Reader," "A Message from Underwater," "Promised," and "Where Do We Start the Story." In a remarkable detail, the salon was completely emptied of classic furniture, and simple wooden seats were placed instead to accommodate a massive orchestra of over 70 musicians, with the presence of the giants of melody Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Mohamed El Mougy, Magdy El Hosseini, and Hani Mohanna. On the balcony of the apartment overlooking the Nile and the garden, El Mougy completed the composition of the song "The Coffee Reader" entirely before its release.
Additionally, the walls of the apartment were adorned with rare artistic collectibles, led by the famous oil painting created by artist Gamal Kamel in the 1960s, which graced the cover of "Sabah El Kheir" magazine, alongside a rare classic portrait painted of the nightingale in the 1950s by the artist El Gabali.
