In the wake of dozens of delegations leaving the United Nations General Assembly hall in protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech, an Israeli diplomat was seen moving around the hall taking notes as the delegations exited.
A circulating video showed the Israeli diplomat observing the movement of the delegations that left their seats as Netanyahu's speech began, before he was seen writing on papers in a scene that sparked widespread reactions on social media.
No official Israeli clarification has been issued yet to specify the nature of the notes the diplomat was taking or to confirm that they included the names of the countries that left the hall, while the scene has been widely interpreted as a record of the delegations participating in the boycott.
This came after the General Assembly hall witnessed a striking scene as Netanyahu began his speech, with delegations from dozens of countries leaving their seats, while boos and pro-Palestinian chants rose within the hall. Video footage showed large areas of empty seats during the speech.
Before starting his speech, Netanyahu sharply criticized the delegations that left, saying that those who have not yet departed from what he described as "moral cowards" could do so, before confirming during his speech that Israel, according to his narrative, is also defending countries whose representatives left the hall.
Reports varied regarding the scale of the boycott, as there was no unified official list identifying all the delegations that left the hall. Some reports mentioned that representatives from 77 countries or delegations left, while other sources indicated that more than 100 delegates participated in the exit, a discrepancy also related to how delegations and delegates are counted.
The boycott came in the context of a Palestinian diplomatic move prior to Netanyahu's speech, as reports indicated that the Palestinian mission to the United Nations urged member states to collectively participate in leaving the hall when the Israeli Prime Minister took the podium.
The protests were not limited to leaving the hall, as the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Khalil Rahman, had to repeatedly call for order within the hall, while members of the Israeli delegation and their supporters in the balconies chanted in support of Netanyahu.
This year's scene follows a similar incident during Netanyahu's speech at the General Assembly in September 2025, when delegations from dozens of countries also left the hall in protest against his positions regarding the war in Gaza and the Palestinian state. Reports at that time described the withdrawal as involving more than 100 diplomats from over 50 countries.
