“Al-A'shi Street” reaches its third part facing a different dramatic test; this time, the issue goes beyond developing the story or adding new characters, after Saudi artist Ilham Ali concluded her journey with “Wadha,” causing one of the main characters that the audience connected with to be absent from the anticipated season in Ramadan.
The irony is that Ilham closed the chapter of “Wadha” simultaneously with her receiving the award for Best Saudi Actress for the character at the 17th Arab Satellite TV Festival in Cairo. This recognition came to affirm the significant presence that the character created, but at the same time, it makes her absence more pronounced when discussing the future of the series.
Since “Wadha” appeared in the world of “Al-A'shi Street,” the character was not just a name among the cast list, but transformed into one of the components that were linked to the storylines and the viewers' memory. Therefore, her departure places the third part in front of a delicate equation: how can the work continue without one of its most prominent characters?
The answer will remain with the creators of the series, especially since the details of the upcoming phase have not been fully revealed yet. However, dramatically, Ilham Ali's absence gives the writers a chance to rearrange the centers of gravity, expand the space for other characters, or introduce new lines capable of pushing the story forward, instead of trying to create a direct substitute for “Wadha.”
In works that extend over multiple parts, the departure of a main character tests the script's ability to renew itself. The success of new parts is linked to the story's ability to evolve, not to the continuous reliance on the popularity of previous characters.
Here, specifically, the task of “Al-A'shi Street 3” seems more sensitive. The upcoming part is required to maintain the identity of the work, while at the same time building new motivations that give the audience a reason to continue with it after part of its structure has changed.
Ilham Ali has made her decision: the journey of “Wadha” has ended. As for “Al-A'shi Street,” it faces a tougher task, which lies in proving that the story can continue on its path when one of its most prominent faces departs.
