For years, the public park has remained a pressing demand in the Al-Harazat neighborhood southeast of Jeddah, despite the expansion of the neighborhood and the increasing number of its residents. Meanwhile, the locals are awaiting the transformation of previous promises into an actual project that provides a nearby outlet for families, children, and youth.
The residents' demands for the establishment of a park and a public walkway date back several years, coinciding with the urban and population growth that the neighborhood has witnessed. In 2018, residents urged the Jeddah Municipality to create a park and walkway, suggesting the utilization of open spaces in the area to establish a recreational outlet serving the residents of Al-Harazat and neighboring neighborhoods. At that time, "Okaz" published the residents' demands, especially since the neighborhood is located in a vast area that can be developed to include a park, a walkway, and recreational facilities, in addition to rehabilitating the road leading to it and developing the surrounding area. The Jeddah Municipality then announced that the Parks and Facilities Department had studied the Al-Harazat area and intended to include some suitable sites in future plans for public parks, with implementation to depend on financial allocations.
Years of Waiting
Since that announcement, residents have been waiting for the translation of this direction into a project on the ground, especially with the neighborhood's expansion, increasing population density, and growing need for nearby recreational and sports facilities. "Okaz" returned in 2022 to convey the residents' demands, including the establishment of parks to serve tens of thousands of residents in the neighborhood. Abdulaziz Al-Omari, one of the residents of Al-Harazat, stated that the municipality had previously announced the existence of a park project for the residents of Al-Harazat, but the project has not materialized, expressing surprise at the existence of a large and densely populated neighborhood without parks or green spaces.
He explained that residents are not asking for a cosmetic project or a secondary facility, but rather for a public space that accommodates families, children, and youth, providing a suitable environment for sitting, exercising, and spending leisure time, especially since the neighborhood's expansion makes it difficult for many residents to rely continuously on the facilities of other neighborhoods.
Existing Walkway...
The Park is Another Demand
Abu Yazan, another resident of Al-Harazat, pointed out that the neighborhood has seen the implementation of a walkway project in recent years, which reached the stage of launching electricity in February 2023, a development that residents welcomed as a long-awaited sports outlet.
However, he emphasized that residents' demands did not stop at the walkway, as the park remains a pressing need, explaining that there is a difference between the walkway and the park in terms of residents' needs; the walkway serves walking as a sport, while the park, if designed comprehensively, provides green spaces, seating areas, children's play areas, family facilities, and spaces for community activities.
Population Growth... and the Need for Nearby Facilities
Abdullah Al-Zahrani believes that Al-Harazat has witnessed significant urban and population growth in recent years, and with the neighborhood's expansion and increasing population, the need for a balanced distribution of public facilities becomes more urgent, so that recreational services are not concentrated in specific parts of Jeddah while large neighborhoods are forced to travel distances to reach them.
Children and Families at the Forefront of Those Waiting
Aboud Al-Zubaidi confirmed that the park, for families and children, is not just a green space, but an outlet where children can play in a suitable environment, families can find places to sit, youth can exercise, and the elderly can benefit from walking paths, in addition to the possibility of hosting community events and open activities for neighborhood residents. He added that the public park in large neighborhoods can become a daily outlet for residents and a comprehensive community destination, especially if designed to meet the needs of different age groups, emphasizing that the residents of Al-Harazat's wait is not just about planting a green space, but about creating a facility that serves the neighborhood's residents of all categories.
Where is "Murooj Jeddah"?
From Al-Harazat?
After years of demands, Abdulhadi Al-Malki raises several questions about the future of the park project: Is it still part of the Jeddah Municipality's future plans, where will its location be, what is the expected timeline for its implementation, and has the project been financially approved?
If the project's priorities, location, or scope have changed, residents believe they have the right to know, so that the demand does not remain suspended between a previous announcement and a new wait.
Residents also wonder about the position of Al-Harazat in the "Murooj Jeddah" project, especially after discussions about the completion of the design studies for the project, and the Jeddah Municipality clarifying that the wetlands east of Jeddah are awaiting an urban project to be implemented by the Jeddah Urban Development Company under the name "Murooj Jeddah".
"Okaz" Awaits a Response from the Municipality
"Okaz" contacted the spokesperson for the Jeddah Municipality to obtain a comment on the residents' demands and the fate of the park project, in addition to inquiring about the area's relation to the "Murooj Jeddah" project, but there was no response by the time of preparing the report for publication, despite more than ten days having passed since the request for a comment.
