The Iraqi arena has witnessed since 2003 a state of complex and unstable political and security intertwining, where the activities of influential forces outside the framework of the state are numerous, linked to external support that transcends the official institutions of the Iraqi state.
First: The Context of Current Escalation
The current tension is related to fundamental shifts in the regional balance of power and a repositioning of international forces in the region, which some parties exploit to impose new mechanisms within the Iraqi scene and to seek to postpone the state's sovereign entitlements.
Second: The Challenge of Restricting Arms to the State
The Iraqi state faces a pivotal entitlement on September 30, which is the announced date for restricting arms to the state. Political readings indicate that there are negotiations seeking to change this date and postpone it to 2028, which could put Iraq once again in jeopardy under international sanctions and economic blockade, which it suffered during the 1990s.
Third: Strategic Transformation After the Cessation of the American-Israeli War
After the cessation of the American-Israeli war against Iran, the targeting policy changed radically, shifting from direct military confrontation to a strategy of disrupting oil flow after the crisis of closing the Strait of Hormuz for all Gulf countries, followed by attempts to stop Saudi oil flow and attacks on its export outlets as a pressure tactic on the global economy. The new strategy is based on three interconnected axes: First: Disrupting exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Second: Disrupting the strategic alternative by targeting the East-West pipeline pumps, Yanbu port, and the export ports on the Red Sea. Third: Disrupting the internal situation by targeting domestic refineries to create a local supply crisis. This explains the recent attack that occurred on September 10, 2026, via drones coming from Iraqi territory.
Fourth: Threatening Global Energy Arteries
The threat is no longer limited to the Strait of Hormuz; the Saudi East-West strategic line, which transports oil from the eastern region fields to Yanbu port on the Red Sea coast as a safe alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, has become directly targeted. Military analyses indicate that this vital line has been subjected to targeting attempts via long-range drones launched from Anbar and Maysan areas within Iraqi territory, aimed at the vital western and eastern regions of the Kingdom. Any success in disrupting exports through Yanbu port will immediately reflect on global oil prices and increase energy costs for the entire international economy.
Fifth: Conclusion
Restricting arms in Iraq is no longer just an internal Iraqi demand; it has become a demand to stop aggressions against the Gulf Arab states, as well as neighboring countries (Jordan and Syria), and even within Iraq in the Kurdistan region. It has become an urgent demand to protect global energy supplies and ensure their economic stability, and to commit to protecting strategic corridors in accordance with international law after the rules of engagement have shifted from direct warfare to warfare over corridors and energy.
