In the hobby of hunting or trapping falcons from the sky, the hunter may spend days waiting for just one falcon, and when he finally catches it, another question arises: how much is this falcon worth? Who determines its value? And how does it reach the falconer who is looking for it?
These questions have been part of the hunting experience itself for years. Knowing about the falcon is one thing, but reaching a market that assigns it value and protects the owner's rights is another. From this very distance, one can understand what the National Falcon Center's auction has accomplished in the local hunting seasons.
On October 1st, the reception of the hunting falcons for this year begins and continues for two months, coinciding with the migration season of falcons in the Kingdom. With every falcon that arrives at the auction, a complete chain can be seen starting from the hunter in the field, passing through reception, transportation, and documentation teams, and ending in front of a group of falconers competing for it in a live auction.
The auction has reorganized the relationship between the hunter and the market. Instead of the sale of the falcon being governed by a circle of acquaintances and individual negotiations, the hunter now has a known place to showcase his falcon, an open bidding process that determines its value, and procedures that document the sale and protect the rights of the parties involved. This transformation is significant in a heritage that relies heavily on inherited knowledge. The hunter knows the migration seasons and their locations, reads the falcon's movements, and possesses experience that cannot be gained in just one season. When this practice enters an organized framework, the organization serves the heritage bearers from within their practice, without taking away their fundamental role.
Perhaps one of the most indicative aspects of the auction is that the organization was not built solely around the sale. The auction is dedicated to the migratory chicks of the peregrine falcon and does not include the gyrfalcon and the lanner falcon, supporting their sustainability and the preservation of their breeds. This idea presents an equation that deserves attention: falconry needs the falconer, the hunter, and the market, but it needs, before all else, the survival of the falcons. Any project that aims for this heritage to continue cannot separate the practice of falconry from the conservation of its natural resource.
Therefore, sales figures alone are not enough to assess the success of the local hunting auction. While the numbers may tell us about the value of a falcon or the volume of trade, they do not inform us about everything that has changed around the market: the arrival of the center's teams to the hunters in various regions of the Kingdom, the transportation of the falcons to the auction site, the provision of accommodation and transport, the documentation of sales transactions, and the opening of bidding to a broader audience of falconers.
The most significant impact is evident at the hunter's level. Someone who starts their journey in a region far from Riyadh can reach an auction followed by falconers and enthusiasts, without the distance or their circle of relationships determining their chances of selling. The value of the falcon becomes subject to competition, and the decision returns to those who wish to buy it.
Over the course of 60 days, during October and November, new falcons will arrive at the center in Malham, revealing to us that the hunting season has become more organized, that the hunter has become part of a clearly defined market, and that the conservation of falcons is part of the role of the National Falcon Center, which seeks to preserve an ancient hobby and also to maintain our identity as Saudis, along with the heritage we carry that extends back thousands of years.
