After the recent participation of the Saudi national team in the World Cup, I believe the time has come for us to turn our attention to the 2034 World Cup, not just as a sporting event we await, but as a national project that starts today. I notice that most discussions revolve around stadiums, infrastructure, transportation, hotels, and the image we will present to the world. All of this is undoubtedly important, even very important, but it is not the most important thing for me.
What concerns me more is the Saudi national team itself, and the question I find more urgent than any other is: Have we actually started building the team that deserves to be the face of the Kingdom in this historic event?
Major teams do not start from a tournament, nor from a new coach, nor from a ready list of players, but they start from a ten-year-old child running after a ball in a simple playground, holding a big dream. Waiting for a player to reach the age of twenty-five and then looking for quick solutions is often an attempt to compensate for years that should have been invested early. If we want the 2034 World Cup to be a Saudi tournament in every detail, we must treat the coming years as a preparation camp extending over a full decade, not just one or two seasons.
I believe that the real beginning is not just in attracting talents, but in redefining the meaning of "talent" itself. We still measure players by the number of goals they score, their speed, or their individual skills, while modern football measures deeper things; such as decision-making speed, intelligence under pressure, the ability to read the field before the ball arrives, and adapting to the changing rhythm of the game. These abilities are not born complete; they are built through specialized training and are reinforced the earlier they begin.
From here, I hope to establish a national program for the Saudi football team, starting from the age of ten, that does not just focus on selecting the best players but works on creating the best football minds. A program that combines physical training, mental analysis, nutrition, psychology, English language, and media; because today’s World Cup player represents not only his club but an entire nation both on and off the field.
I have an idea that I believe could make a real difference; why not have a "development passport" for every talented player that accompanies them from the age of ten? It should not be limited to recording goals or the number of appearances, but should document their mental development, discipline, learning speed, improvement in decision-making during matches, and even their response to pressure. Then we will not judge the player by a beautiful moment or an exceptional match, but by a comprehensive growth trajectory that spans years.
I also have another idea worth trying. Instead of gathering talents in short camps that end with the tournament, why not form a stable group of fifty players of similar ages who live together through a ten-year development journey? The goal is not to win a youth championship but to reach the World Cup knowing each other as well as they know themselves. True harmony cannot be bought or created in weeks; it is formed over years.
I also believe that the search for talents should not be limited to football fields. In athletics, there are runners with exceptional speed, in gymnastics, there are athletes with rare balance and flexibility, and in combat sports, there are competitors with high reaction speed and remarkable mental discipline. Some of these may become completely different football players if discovered early. So why limit our search to one field when talent may be waiting for us in another track or gym? I believe that the greatest gift hosting the World Cup has given us is not the right to organize the tournament, but the right to create an entire generation that knows from their teenage years that they may compete in the World Cup on their homeland's soil and in front of their fans. This dream, if well invested, can change the way of training, discipline, ambition, and even the player's perception of themselves.
In conclusion, I reiterate my conviction: stadiums can be built in a year, two years, or three, but a world-class player can only be built through many years of continuous work. Therefore, we must start today... from where every great team begins: from the child, not from the tournament.
