Ziad Rahbani's political views were not as beautiful as his musical melodies. Just as his musical talent exploded early, composing his first melody at the age of fourteen, his political radicalism began at the same age, as he recounts how he told his father, Assi Rahbani, with sharp enthusiasm, that he would leave the house to support Pierre Gemayel, the leader of the Kataeb Party, while his father ordered him to go to his bedroom!
Ziad Rahbani swung between the winds of politics from a young age, often appearing lost in the labyrinths of political slogans. However, his influence from leftist ideas and his troubled emotions towards the injustices faced by oppressed peoples made him lean towards national issues and groups, to the extent that he rebelled against his environment and moved to live in Western Beirut during the height of the Lebanese division during the civil war!
For years, Ziad immersed himself in expressing bold political opinions and criticizing politicians through his radio programs and plays, becoming a symbol of rebellion. It is said that his mother, the iconic singer Fairuz, accepted an invitation to lunch from the wife of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. When Assad joined the table, Fairuz told him that Ziad does not spare anyone from criticism in his radio program, and Assad took her words as a plea to tolerate her son's criticisms, instructing his security apparatus not to target Ziad!
It is criticized that Ziad did not show sympathy for the suffering of the Syrian people during the oppression inflicted by Bashar al-Assad, and he saw no problem in Hezbollah's bullying of the Lebanese and its authoritarian policies that brought death and destruction to Lebanon. This is surprising for someone who grew up consumed by ideas supporting peoples and opposing oppressive regimes and parties!
Perhaps it is the fate of some creators that their genius and creativity are born from the turmoil of political ideas and stances, and history has many examples of this!
What redeems Ziad Rahbani is that his political opinions and stances did not exceed the limits of thought; he did not carry a weapon, did not torture a body, and did not kill a soul, while his music provided healing for many people. It is enough to listen to the most beautiful songs of Fairuz to realize Ziad's value!
