In a landmark judicial ruling that revealed one of the largest cases of financial corruption and embezzlement of public funds, the Criminal Division of the Primary Court in Tunisia sentenced the former president and director general of the National Tobacco and Matches Agency to 18 years in prison in absentia, and ordered him to repay an amount exceeding 90,000 Tunisian dinars to the agency.
The details of the network relate to extensive looting and embezzlement of massive quantities of cigarettes belonging to the state-owned institution, which were unlawfully sold outside the approved distribution channels, causing significant financial losses to the agency exceeding 170,000 Tunisian dinars.
The judiciary charged the prominent official (who previously held the position of Chief of Staff to the Minister of Industry and headed the Alcohol Agency before being officially dismissed in 2023) with exploiting his position to harm the administration and achieve personal benefits, in addition to embezzling public property, resulting in his permanent disqualification from holding any government positions.
The penalties did not stop at the top of the hierarchy; they also included four other employees of the agency who received prison sentences ranging from two to eight years, along with a requirement to repay 81,000 Tunisian dinars jointly and to be barred from public service for their involvement in facilitation and participation, while the court acquitted five other defendants due to lack of evidence.
