The death toll from the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 5,000 cases, while the number of infections has exceeded 10,000, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health released today (Saturday).
The data showed 5,026 deaths out of 10,351 infections, with a mortality rate approaching 50%, in one of the deadliest waves of the virus in the country's history.
The current outbreak is attributed to the rare "Bundi Bugyo" strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment, while authorities are facing difficulties in containing the spread of the infection due to delays in case detection, armed conflicts, and pressure on health services.
The virus has spread beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo, with reported cases in Kenya and Nigeria, raising concerns about the potential expansion of the outbreak across the African continent.
This outbreak is considered the second largest recorded Ebola wave globally, after the West Africa epidemic from 2014 to 2016, which claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people.
