A recent scientific study revealed a link between excessive consumption of certain artificial sweeteners and accelerated decline in memory and cognitive abilities, raising questions about their long-term effects on brain health, despite their popularity as healthy alternatives to sugar.
The study published in the journal "Neurology," affiliated with the American Academy of Neurology, found that individuals who consumed the most low-calorie or calorie-free sweeteners experienced a faster decline in thinking and memory skills compared to those who consumed less, with the association being more pronounced among individuals with diabetes.
The study included seven common types of sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose. These substances are used in the production of diet sodas, energy drinks, flavored waters, and low-calorie yogurt and desserts.
Following 12,000 individuals for 8 years
The researchers analyzed data from 12,772 adults in Brazil, with an average age of 52 years at the start of the study, and monitored their condition over approximately eight years.
The researchers relied on questionnaires regarding the foods and beverages consumed by participants in the previous year to estimate their daily sweetener intake, then divided them into three groups based on the amounts consumed.
The average daily intake was about 20 milligrams in the lowest consumption group, compared to 191 milligrams in the highest group, which is an amount of aspartame comparable to that found in one can of diet soda. Sorbitol was the most consumed among the seven sweeteners, with an average of 64 milligrams per day.
Participants underwent cognitive tests at three stages to measure memory, language, and information processing speed, including the ability to recall words and retain and use information temporarily.
Cognitive abilities declined by 62%
The results showed that those with the highest sweetener consumption experienced a faster decline of 62% in overall thinking and memory abilities compared to the lowest consumption group, a difference estimated by researchers to be equivalent to about 1.6 additional years of cognitive decline during the follow-up period.
The moderate consumption group also showed a faster decline of 35%, equivalent to about 1.3 additional years according to the study's estimates.
The relationship was more pronounced among individuals under the age of sixty, particularly in verbal fluency tests and overall cognitive performance, while no similar association was observed among those over sixty. Additionally, the association was stronger among individuals with diabetes compared to those without.
6 sweeteners linked to memory decline
When analyzing the sweeteners individually, researchers found a link between six types and faster cognitive performance decline: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, erythritol, sorbitol, and xylitol, while no similar association was found with tagatose.
Should we stop consuming sugar substitutes?
The lead researcher, Dr. Claudia Kimi Suemoto from the University of São Paulo in Brazil, stated that low-calorie sweeteners are often considered a healthy alternative to sugar, but the results suggest that some types may be linked to negative effects on brain health over time.
The researchers emphasized that the study does not prove that sweeteners cause brain damage or memory loss, but rather reveals a statistical association that warrants further research.
Among the main limitations of the study is its reliance on dietary information provided by participants themselves, the exclusion of all available types of sweeteners, and its observational nature, which does not allow for direct causal relationships to be established.
The researchers noted the need for longer and more comprehensive studies to determine the effects of each type of sweetener and to explore other alternatives such as applesauce, honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar.
The research was supported by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
The results do not imply that all sugar substitutes are harmful or require immediate cessation of use, but they highlight the importance of not overconsuming them and the need to understand their potential effects on memory and cognitive functions, especially among individuals with diabetes.
