A former British flight attendant survived a bloody riot inside a prison in Sri Lanka that resulted in the deaths of 30 people, before being transferred to another prison amid concerns for her safety, while she has been detained for about 18 months in connection with a drug trafficking case.
Charlotte Mai Lee, 22 years old, has been in custody since May 2025, when authorities arrested her at Colombo Airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle approximately 46 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, valued at around £1.2 million.
According to the British newspaper "Daily Mail," Lee was transferred from Negombo Prison to Kulyapitiya Prison following a riot that broke out last July and lasted for two days, resulting in the deaths of 20 inmates and 10 prison staff during clashes between two rival groups.
Sources close to her reported that she has suffered psychological trauma due to the events, but she has begun to adapt to her new detention environment and is trying to learn the local language to overcome communication difficulties.
The case stems from the discovery of drugs in her travel bags, distributed in vacuum-sealed bags. Lee denies any knowledge of their presence, asserting that they were placed in her luggage without her knowledge during a trip to Bangkok, and she has not been formally charged, according to reports.
If convicted, the young woman faces a potential prison sentence of up to 25 years. She had previously spoken about her detention conditions, mentioning that she shares a cell with five women and sleeps on a thin mattress on a concrete floor.
