The coldness of the hands and feet seems to be a natural response to lower temperatures, but it can sometimes turn into a health indicator that deserves attention, especially when it occurs repeatedly without a clear reason, or is accompanied by changes in finger color and pain or numbness.
When exposed to cold, the body works to constrict the small blood vessels in the extremities to maintain the heat of vital organs, which temporarily reduces blood flow to the hands and feet. However, persistent coldness may be associated with other factors, including circulatory disorders and certain health conditions.
The phenomenon of "Raynaud's" is among the conditions that cause episodes of vasoconstriction in the fingers of the hands or feet, often in response to cold or stress, and may be accompanied by a change in the color of the fingers to white or blue before blood flow returns. Specialists emphasize that cold extremities alone are not sufficient to diagnose a specific disorder, as determining the cause requires looking at accompanying symptoms, medical history, and clinical examination.
Avoiding direct exposure to cold and keeping the body warm can help alleviate some symptoms, while persistent coldness or severe pain or sudden color changes warrant medical evaluation.
