The Kenyan Ministry of Health announced the registration of 4 new cases of the Ebola virus, including 3 among healthcare workers, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 7, amid ongoing isolation measures and contact tracing.
The ministry clarified that the new cases included a man who was a relative of the first patient who died from the virus, in addition to three healthcare workers who participated in his care inside the hospital, confirming that all four cases were under quarantine before the symptoms appeared and the infection was diagnosed.
3 healthcare workers among the infected
According to health authorities, the infected healthcare workers are two men and one woman aged between 29 and 35 years, who interacted with the first case on October 3 and 4, before being placed under quarantine since October 9.
The relative of the deceased had been in quarantine since October 6, and all four cases showed symptoms of fever before laboratory tests confirmed their infection with the "Bundibugyo" virus, one of the types of Ebola.
128 contacts under quarantine
The Kenyan Ministry of Health confirmed that it has managed to trace 128 out of 130 contacts of the cases and has placed them under quarantine and monitoring, while efforts continue to reach the remaining two individuals.
The ministry emphasized that the level of risk to the general population remains low, as there is currently no evidence of widespread transmission of the virus within the community, although the new infections represent cases of transmission linked to the first infected individual in Kenya.
Kenya recorded its first confirmed case in early October of a man who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and arrived in Nairobi on October 3 before dying two days later, prompting authorities to initiate extensive operations to trace and isolate his contacts.
