A tourist's attempt to remove a spider from the bathroom of a villa in Bali, Indonesia, turned into a fire that completely destroyed the property after he lit a piece of paper to scare the insect, which then spread to the villa's highly flammable roof. The incident did not result in any injuries, but it caused significant material damage.
According to the "People" website, the 45-year-old Nepali tourist, Gaurab Rana, caused the fire to break out inside the villa where he was staying in the northern Kuta area on October 5th.
According to Australian media reports citing local police, Rana lit the paper inside the bathroom in an attempt to drive away the spider, then left the area for another room. During that time, the wind carried the burning paper towards the villa's roof made of "alang-alang" grass, a traditional material known for its quick flammability, which led to the flames spreading to parts of the property.
The fire quickly engulfed the villa and its contents, while firefighters, assisted by local residents, intervened to control the flames. The tourist escaped without injuries, and no damage was reported to neighboring properties.
Some reports estimated the value of the villa at around $112,000, while other Australian reports indicated that its value could reach $160,000. The legal actions that may be taken against the tourist in connection with the incident have not yet been clarified.
