Pillows and bed covers can become a recurring source of allergy symptoms for some individuals, especially with the accumulation of dust mites and allergens within fabrics and furnishings, which may explain bouts of sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose upon waking in the morning.
Specialized studies in allergy diseases indicate that dust mites, which are microscopic creatures living in warm and humid environments, represent one of the causes of allergic rhinitis and asthma in individuals who are sensitive to them, as allergens accumulate in pillows, mattresses, and carpets.
Symptoms may worsen for some sufferers with continuous exposure to these triggers, and may be accompanied by itchy eyes, nasal obstruction, and sleep disturbances, particularly in poorly ventilated or high-humidity bedrooms.
Experts recommend regularly washing bed covers, using protective covers for pillows and mattresses, reducing dust accumulation, and maintaining appropriate indoor humidity levels.
Morning sneezing remains a multifactorial symptom; it may be associated with nasal allergies, environmental irritants, or other factors, making the persistence of symptoms a reason worthy of medical evaluation to determine their source.
