Global ocean surface temperatures recorded a record level for September, as the "El Niño" phenomenon intensified, with warnings increasing about strong warming that could extend its effects until 2027.
Data from the European "Copernicus" Climate Change Service showed that the average ocean surface temperature outside polar regions reached 21.05 degrees Celsius during September 2026, surpassing the previous record for this month of 20.92 degrees Celsius, recorded in September 2023.
The waters in the "El Niño 3.4" region of the Pacific, which are used to monitor the development of the phenomenon, recorded an average surface temperature of 29.70 degrees Celsius during the month, the highest level in the records monitored by "Copernicus" for this area, exceeding the peaks of previous strong events in the years 1982-1983, 1997-1998, and 2015-2016.
The rise in ocean temperatures coincided with ongoing global warming; the average air temperature near the Earth's surface reached 16.27 degrees Celsius in September, an increase of 1.63 degrees above the average for the pre-industrial period between 1850 and 1900, making it the second hottest September recorded globally, after September 2023.
Carlo Buontempo, director of the "Copernicus" Climate Change Service, stated that global warming has exceeded the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold for the second consecutive month, with the "El Niño" phenomenon continuing to intensify, suggesting that this series of months exceeding the threshold could last until 2027.
As an additional indicator of the expected strength of the phenomenon, the World Meteorological Organization reported that the chances of "El Niño" continuing until February 2027 are approaching 100%, with expectations that surface water temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific will reach levels about 3.7 degrees Celsius above normal during the period from October to December.
The U.S. Climate Prediction Center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also predicted a strong to very strong phenomenon from January to March 2027, with a probability exceeding 83%.
"El Niño" is a warm phase of a natural climate cycle known as the "El Niño-Southern Oscillation," occurring when trade winds in the tropical Pacific weaken, causing warm water to accumulate in its central and eastern regions, where the phenomenon can affect weather patterns around the world, increasing the likelihood of drought in some areas and raising the chances of heavy rainfall and flooding in others, depending on regional conditions.
However, the impact of "El Niño" cannot be separated from the warming caused by human activities, particularly greenhouse gas emissions resulting from fossil fuel combustion. The rising temperatures of the planet provide a warmer backdrop that interacts with natural climate fluctuations, which may increase the severity of some of its effects.
The forecasts raise concerns about recording extremely high global temperatures in the coming months and in 2027, especially if the intensification of "El Niño" coincides with the continued accumulation of heat in the atmosphere and oceans.
