Placing a mobile phone in the left shirt pocket, near the heart, raises questions about its potential impact on heartbeats. However, the available scientific evidence does not prove that regular exposure to phone signals causes arrhythmias in healthy individuals, although special precautions are necessary for those with implanted cardiac devices.
According to a report published by the Indian website "Hindustan Times" on October 1, 2026, cardiologist Dr. Sameer Koba, director and head of the cardiology unit at Delhi Specialty Hospital, clarified that the normal use of mobile phones or placing them in the left pocket is not associated, according to available evidence, with a proven increase in cardiac arrhythmias in healthy individuals.
Mobile phones rely on radio frequency signals to connect to mobile networks and wireless devices. These signals are classified as non-ionizing radiation, which does not have enough energy to cause the same direct effects as ionizing radiation, such as X-rays.
This fact does not mean that all concerns related to phones are unfounded, but it highlights the importance of distinguishing between established health effects and concerns that lack sufficient scientific evidence. So far, there is no compelling evidence that regular exposure to phone signals leads to arrhythmias in the general population.
Some individuals may feel that the phone affects their heartbeat when they place it close to their chest, but this sensation does not necessarily indicate an actual change in heart rhythm. Vibrations or increased attention to the chest area may make a person more aware of their normal heartbeats, especially if they are experiencing anxiety or constantly monitoring their pulse.
The precautions required for individuals using implanted electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers or implantable defibrillators, differ. In these cases, the magnetic fields emitted by some phones can interfere with the device's operation if they come too close.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends maintaining a safe distance between phones and implanted medical devices, while the American Heart Association advises keeping the phone at least 6 inches (about 15 centimeters) away from these devices and avoiding placing it in the chest pocket directly above the implantation site. It is also important to adhere to the instructions provided by the doctor and the device manufacturer.
As for the feeling of palpitations or irregular heartbeat, it should not be automatically linked to the phone, as it may be associated with multiple factors, including stress, excessive caffeine intake, dehydration, lack of sleep, or an underlying arrhythmia that requires medical evaluation.
Palpitations accompanied by chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath necessitate urgent medical care, rather than merely changing the phone's location or assuming it is the cause.
Thus, there is no compelling evidence that placing a phone in the left shirt pocket causes arrhythmias in a healthy person, while maintaining a safe distance and medical precautions remains essential for individuals relying on implanted cardiac devices.
