The tropical storm (Isaias) formed in the southwestern part of the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday morning, with expectations that it will rapidly intensify over the next two days before heading towards the northern U.S. Gulf Coast; according to the National Hurricane Center.
The center stated that the storm is a candidate for "rapid intensification" in the coming hours and days, with sustained winds around its center reaching about 40 miles per hour, and it was located approximately 600 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
Isaias is expected to move eastward over the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico before sharply turning north towards the U.S. Gulf Coast, coinciding with its continued strengthening.
Could reach Category Two
Forecasts indicate that the storm could peak in strength as a Category Two hurricane, with winds potentially reaching 110 miles per hour by Thursday night or the early hours of Friday, before losing some of its strength just prior to making landfall, while remaining a dangerous tropical storm.
Hurricane and storm surge warnings are likely to be issued for parts of the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday, indicating that affected areas could experience winds of 74 miles per hour or more, along with life-threatening coastal flooding within 48 hours.
Isaias is expected to begin bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerously high sea levels to areas stretching from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle starting Friday.
The rain bands associated with the storm could also lead to the formation of several tornadoes as it approaches the coast.
First Atlantic hurricane of the year
If Isaias becomes a hurricane, it will be the first tropical storm in the Atlantic basin this year, ending a record waiting period associated with the exceptionally strong impacts of the El Niño phenomenon.
It is still too early to determine the storm's final path or its exact strength as it approaches land, but authorities are urging residents along the Gulf Coast, from Louisiana to the Big Bend area in Florida, to monitor weather updates and prepare for any developments.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 25 counties on Tuesday in anticipation of the storm's impacts, urging residents to make emergency plans and gather hurricane supplies.
Emergency response teams have also begun preparing generators, fuel, food, water, and flood barriers in the Tallahassee and Santa Rosa areas in anticipation of any potential response or evacuation operations.
Oil companies prepare for the storm
Preparations have extended to oil and gas facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, where energy companies have taken precautionary measures in anticipation of deteriorating weather conditions.
Isaias is facing weather conditions influenced by the El Niño phenomenon, which have significantly contributed to limiting tropical system activity in the Atlantic during the current hurricane season.
However, Gulf of Mexico waters are recording record temperatures for this time of year, providing a strong energy source for the storm.
Heavy rain is the biggest threat
Regardless of the storm's final path, heavy rain poses a major concern along the Gulf Coast and other parts of the southern United States this weekend.
Areas stretching from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle and the Big Bend area are expected to receive rainfall amounts ranging from 3 to 6 inches, with localized amounts potentially reaching 10 inches in some areas.
Rain is expected to begin intensifying in coastal areas starting Friday, continuing through the weekend and gradually extending inland.
Forecasters warn that the storm does not necessarily need to reach hurricane strength to cause significant damage, especially with global temperatures rising, which makes tropical systems more capable of carrying large amounts of moisture and producing heavy rainfall.
Hurricane season nearing its end
Typically, about four or more tropical storms form during October and November, but late-season activity varies significantly from year to year.
In 2024, seven storms formed during October and November, while only two storms formed during the same period in 2023.
Late-season storms often form near the United States, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and waters off the southeastern coast, increasing the likelihood of direct impacts on land.
Although the number of storms typically decreases during this period, they can be highly destructive.
Hurricane records indicate notable examples of the dangers posed by late-season storms, including Category Five Hurricane Melissa, which caused widespread destruction in Jamaica in the last week of October last year.
Hurricane Michael also struck the Florida Panhandle on October 10, 2018, becoming the most recent Category Five hurricane to make landfall in the United States on record.
Hurricane Sandy, which hit the East Coast in late October 2012, is one of the most famous late-season storms, having transformed into a massive hybrid storm and caused widespread damage along the East Coast.
