U.S. authorities have revealed new details about the shooting that claimed the lives of two people and injured 35 others during a public event in Vienna, Georgia, while the identities of the shooters and the motive behind the attack remain unknown.
County Sheriff Grady Pefley identified the victims as Jakivion Jackson, 21, from Cordele, and Makaylib Jackson, 23, from Hawkinsville, while authorities confirmed that their bodies will undergo autopsies at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's medical examiner's office.
Recent details indicate that the shooting scene was broader than it appeared in the early hours of the incident, as the gathering spanned an area of nearly four city blocks, with more than 50 bullets fired from at least two locations separated by about a street, causing widespread chaos among the attendees.
Pefley stated that over a thousand people were present in the area when the shooting erupted, and that police officers were already patrolling near the event due to the large crowd before they heard gunfire and moved towards its source.
Injuries were not limited to those struck by gunfire, as authorities explained that some of the injured sustained injuries while trying to flee the scene following the shooting. The ages of the injured ranged from 14 to 51 years, with their conditions varying from stable to critical.
The injured were taken to several hospitals in the area, with Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele receiving a large number of them in the early hours, and medical teams had to activate mass casualty protocols and coordinate the transfer of some cases to other medical facilities.
The incident coincided with a weekend designated for "Back to School" celebrations in Dooly County, following a local high school football game. However, education officials confirmed that the gathering where the shooting occurred was not an official school event, while the county schools announced they would open their doors on Monday with enhanced security measures.
According to local authorities, the city had not issued an official permit for organizing the event, and it remains unclear who organized the gathering or how many people participated in the shooting.
Georgia authorities, with the involvement of the state’s Bureau of Investigation, continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses to determine the circumstances of the attack. As of the latest official statement, no suspects have been announced as arrested, and authorities have not identified the motive for the shooting or the number of armed individuals involved.
The incident comes at a time when the United States continues to experience incidents of mass shootings, raising concerns about the safety of large gatherings, especially informal events where it can sometimes be difficult to identify the organizing party or enforce adequate security measures.
