Some nutritional issues in the elderly begin from a place that may seem distant from the plate; the teeth, gums, and ability to chew largely determine what a person can easily consume, and difficulties in chewing may lead to the exclusion of important foods from the diet.
Studies addressing oral health and nutrition in the elderly indicate a correlation between reduced chewing ability and decreased dietary diversity and the likelihood of declining diet quality, especially when consuming vegetables, fruits, meats, and some protein sources becomes more challenging. The problem worsens with tooth loss, dry mouth, or ill-fitting dentures, as individuals may turn to soft and easy-to-swallow foods, which are not necessarily the most balanced nutritional choices. Specialists believe that assessing the nutrition of the elderly needs to pay attention to oral health alongside appetite, weight, and overall health status, especially when there is a sudden change in food quality. Regular dental check-ups, addressing chewing issues, and choosing appropriate foods help maintain meal variety, rather than reducing the problem to just poor appetite.
