I wish you could know what is in my heart, and I say it this time in its literal sense. This heart of mine that has accompanied me all these years, has carried what it carried, loved whom it loved, broken where it had to break, rejoiced more than it showed, and saddened more than it should have, has finally decided to announce itself in its own way. Its electricity has increased. Just like that, in a simple medical way, and with all the complexity that the soul knows when it comes to the heart.
And soon this heart will undergo some cauterization, to calm some of its rebellious wires, and to organize that excess electricity which it seems it has found no place to discharge except within itself. And I know it well. A heart that has never been humble from the beginning. It has never known how to love a little, nor to worry a little, nor to long for things as needed. It has always exaggerated in everything, then left me to bear the consequences of its exaggerations. I have given it fifty years of life, and it has returned them to me in beats, faces, memories, places, and some scars that do not show up in an EKG.
Oh my old companion, are you not tired? How many times have I asked you to calm down, yet you went on as if you know life better than I do. You would run to those I love before I could reach them, forgive before I decided to forgive, and long for things I convinced myself for a long time that I had forgotten.
And you, in return, carried many things for me.
I know that now.
You carried the words I never said. The goodbyes I pretended to be strong in front of. Those who left and left their places inside me empty. The joy that passed quickly and you hid it somewhere, and the sadness that you concealed from people and took upon yourself.
Perhaps that is why your electricity has increased.
And what wires can bear all this age? It is strange for a day to come when a person sits in front of his heart as if sitting in front of someone he loves and fears for. I used to think you were me, but now I see you as an independent companion, with your own struggles, moods, and small protests.
They will come to you to extinguish an excess point of electricity.
As for the other things, I do not want anyone to touch them.
Leave in it the places I love. Leave the names of those who passed through it and left a good mark. Leave the window of nostalgia open, even if it tires it sometimes. Leave it something of its old madness, and its amazing ability to believe in people, to rejoice with them, to suffer from them, and then return to them with a heart that is almost new.
(Cauterize) whatever you want of its electricity, and leave me its glow, for I, despite all that this heart has done to me, love it.
I love it with a strange love that I do not know how to explain. Perhaps because when I search through my entire life, I find no witness to it more faithful than it. It was present in everything. In the first fear, the first love, in a hand I shook and have not forgotten its warmth, in a news I awaited, in a door I knocked on hesitantly, in my mother's face, in a friend's laughter, in the absence of a dear one, and in those nights that the heart knows but the narrative does not.
Everything has passed through here.
And that is why it pains me to know that you will be touched, oh my heart, even if the touch is a remedy.
It pains me because when we love something, we fear for it even from the hand that comes to save it. I know that for doctors, it is science, precision, numbers, and a screen that draws your pulse, but for me, it is something else.
For me, there is a complete life lying there. So go, my non-humble companion. Go to your small cauterization, and let them fix something of your electrical (chaos).
And return to me as you were, or a little less troublesome.
I do not want from you heroism, nor do I ask you to be strong. It is enough for me that you return to your old rhythm, and continue your quiet work in my chest, that work for which I have never thanked you for fifty years because I thought it was a given.
And I promise you one thing. When you return, I will listen to you more. And I will try, as much as I can, not to burden you with what you cannot bear.
But I do not promise you that I will love less, for this, oh my heart, is your old problem with me. (!)
